Ruettimann Contemporary is an independent artist advisory and curatorial practice based in Zurich, founded by Thomas Ruettimann. Drawing on experience across Sotheby's, Hauser & Wirth, Galerie Eva Presenhuber and Galerie Peter Kilchmann, the practice provides confidential strategic advice to artists while developing independent curatorial projects and institutional collaborations.

Swiss-born art historian Thomas Ruettimann lived in the United States from 2005 to 2018, including ten years in New York, where he built his career across the international art market. He began at the global headquarters of Sotheby's, holding managerial and specialist roles within the auction house before joining Hauser & Wirth New York in 2013. Working closely with the gallery's president, he gained first-hand experience collaborating with many of today's leading contemporary artists and developed an in-depth understanding of the relationships between artists, galleries, collectors and institutions.

Following his return to Zurich in 2018, Ruettimann joined Galerie Eva Presenhuber before serving as Director Artist Liaison at Galerie Peter Kilchmann (Zurich/Paris) from 2023 to 2025. Throughout these roles, he oversaw international exhibition projects, institutional collaborations and the long-term strategic development of artists' careers.

Art historian Judith Opferkuch complements the practice with extensive experience in exhibition management, cultural communication and architecture. Following several years in Paris, where she completed her master's degree while working in the cultural sector, she joined Herzog & de Meuron as a communications specialist before becoming Head of Communications for the Zurich office of Itten+Brechbuehl, one of Switzerland's leading architecture and general planning firms. Her experience strengthens the practice's interdisciplinary approach, particularly in the fields of communication, architecture and cultural projects.

Today, the practice specialises in strategic artist advisory, curatorial project management and long-term artist development. Drawing on experience across the international art market, leading galleries and institutional collaborations, Thomas Ruettimann advises artists on strategic career development, helping them strengthen their professional positioning, develop sustainable careers and expand their international opportunities.

All advisory engagements arehandled with confidentialityand are tailored to the individual needs of each artist and project.

RUETTIMANN CONTEMPORARY
(former exhibition space in Zurich-Wiedikon)

From August 2020 to July 2022, Ruettimann Contemporary operated as an independent programme gallery from a temporary exhibition space at Weststrasse 145 in Zurich-Wiedikon. Housed in a vacant retail unit awaiting redevelopment, the gallery transformed an otherwise unused commercial space into a platform for contemporary art, presenting seven exhibitions and a series of solo presentations by both established and emerging artists.

The programme was driven by a curatorial interest in dialogue, experimentation and accessibility, bringing together artists from different generations and backgrounds within an intimate exhibition setting. In July 2021, the gallery expanded from 65 to 157 square metres through the temporary use of an adjoining retail unit, allowing for more ambitious exhibitions and installations. The programme concluded with an additional exhibition in the autumn of 2022, presented in the recently vacated premises of VFO (Verein für Originalgraphik) on Verena-Conzett-Strasse in Zurich.

All curatorial work, writing, exhibition production, project management, art handling, logistics and installations were carried out by Thomas Ruettimann and Judith Opferkuch.

We are grateful to all participating artists, collaborators and visitors whose enthusiasm and support made this programme possible.

After the conclusion of the temporary gallery programme, Thomas Ruettimann joined Galerie Peter Kilchmann (Zurich/Paris). Today, Ruettimann Contemporary continues as an independent practice specialising in strategic artist advisory, curatorial project management and artist development.
