Swiss-born art historian Thomas Ruettimann moved to the United States in 2005 and lived in New York from 2008 until 2018. From 2008 to 2012, Ruettimann was employed at the global headquarters of the auction house Sotheby’s in managerial roles in operations and specialist departments. In 2013, he joined the newly expanding art gallery Hauser & Wirth New York. There he worked closely with the present-day president and gained in-depth experience in the collaboration with some of today’s most significant contemporary artists.

Upon his return to Zurich in 2018, Ruettimann worked at Gallery Eva Presenhuber. In Spring 2023, he joined Galerie Peter Kilchmann Zurich/Paris.

Thomas Ruettimann is joined by art historian Judith Opferkuch who gained extensive experience in managing international art exhibitions and in cultural journalism. From 2008 until 2013, Opferkuch lived in Paris where she completed her master’s degree and gained further work experience in the cultural field. From 2017 until 2021, she worked in communications at the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. Since Spring 2023, Opferkuch heads the communications department of the Zurich branch of the large architecture firm Itten+Brechbühl.

With Ruettimann Contemporary, Thomas Ruettimann and Judith Opferkuch collaborate with national and international artists.
As of Summer 2023 Ruettimann Contemporary focuses on art advisory, project management, artist liaising, writing and editing.

RUETTIMANN CONTEMPORARY

From September 2020 until July 2022, Ruettimann Contemporary organized six exhibitions and several solo presentations at Weststrasse 145 in Zurich. All exhibitions, curatorial activities, writing, operations, shipping, and installations were executed by Thomas Ruettimann and Judith Opferkuch. July 2021, we expanded the space from 65 sqm to 157 sqm by adding the ground floor of an abandoned store in the same location. Due to renovations in the summer of 2022, we vacated the building and continued to organize exhibitions with various collaborators in Zurich.

We use a hybrid model between gallery and art space that is privately funded by the sale of the exhibited works. In this endeavour we work with our peers such as existing off-spaces, artist studios, and art galleries.

Many thanks go to all participating artists and the great support of our community.
